Preventing Dust Allergy

By Patricia | February 3, 2010

An allergy occurs when the human body radically responds to allergens which attack the immune system. An allergen can be anything from food items, pollen from flowers, certain kinds of medication, or even an insect sting. Dust allergies can be triggered at home due to pet dander, moulds and mildew, cockroaches, and dust mites which usually settle on mattresses, pillow covers, clothes, sweaters, and carpets. Since your allergy is aggravated during winter, it could be caused because you stay indoors during the season and the humidity in the atmosphere is likely to increase the growth of fungus and moulds around the house. In case you or another member of your family is a smoker, the smoke can aggravate your condition. Even the Christmas and thanksgiving decorations put up in your house could lead to this condition. The latter have a high tendency to harbour dust mites.

Symptoms and Treatment

Dust allergies are symptomized by a runny nose, an itchy throat and eyes, nasal congestion, incessant sneezing, and occasionally ear aches. If left untreated the person can even develop asthma and other related problems. As far as home remedies are concerned eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially those that are high in Vitamin B5, C, and E. Add onions, garlic, and ginger to all your food, as these will help the immune system resist the allergens. Avoid oily, fried food, bleached flour and white sugar, steroids, and antibiotics. They will also aid in clearing up the nasal congestion and help clear the cold. An air conditioned environment is likely to reduce the chances of dust allergies and you can also use a good vacuum cleaner on the carpet and change your sheets every day. If you have a pet at home, wash it at least once a week and brush its coat daily to keep the dust away. Take a few basil leaves and crush them with a little water till they are a fine paste. Apply this onto all the rashes that the allergy causes and wash off in half an hour. Make a concoction out of the juice of one lime and a spoon of honey and mix it into a glass of warm water. Consume on an empty stomach every morning. Green tea and camomile tea are excellent anti oxidants and function as an antihistamine. You may have 2 cups of this every day after using a teaspoon of honey to sweeten it. Consuming papaya seeds that are finely mashed can also aid in battling the allergy.
