A Mantra is a group of words that are said to have an effect on the mind and psyche – in fact on the whole consciousness. Even though conventionally handed by a Guru, in the absence of one, the practitioner is allowed to pick his / her own mantra. One important standard for selection of a mantra is that, when articulated, it should appeal to the mind fully.
Mantras are central to today’s meditation, hence it is important to understand the techniques and benefits as well as side-effects properly. By chanting a mantra, either loudly, softly or silently, the words or phrases gain new meaning they once are repeated. The conscious thinking process is gradually tuned higher till you achieve a new state of consciousness.
However, silence is not the ultimate objective. Its attainment is just a means to an end. Techniques of Mantra Meditation It is widely known that an abacus or rosary is related to the Christian religion. However, as a matter of fact, it was actually introduced by the ancient Hindus. The Arabs learnt the similar technique from them and, in turn, taught it to many others. So, mantra incantation that was originally conceived as a health practice, and the Rosary that is basically a religious practice in Europe, could have the same background. Benefits of Mantra Meditation Japa or Mantra Meditation is highly effective, since it gives the mind an anchor to bring it back as it wanders. The mantra, when combined with the Japa Mala – string of beads – provide tangible anchors to which thoughts are directed back as they go out of control. This is the reason why mantra meditation is one of the most preferred forms of meditation for beginners. Mantra incantation is also said to create powerful vibes that can be directed to specific "chakras" to attract divine forces. This process is also reported to mysteriously heal the spiritual, physical and psychological bodies. It is vital to note that that when a mantra is being chanted, the words and their rhythm should necessarily be enjoyed and the practitioner should surrender himself / herself to the experience. Side-effects of Mantra Meditation Some people might choose to feel anxious or tense. Naturally, they have all the side-effects of that, rather than spend the time in mantra meditation. Other people prefer to medicate with alcohol — producing serious side-effects — just because it's easier. But there are no side effects to the practise of mantra meditation. As a matter of fact, the only thing it will cost you is the time it takes you to read this – that, and the couple minutes of involved practice everyday.
