One of the first steps to consider before one decides to start walking regularly is to first consult their doctor who will decide if walking or any form of exercise is suitable for the person taking into consideration the age, gender, medical history of the person. As soon as the doctor gives the individual the approval to start walking as a form of exercise the next step for the person would be to invest in a good pair of walking shoes. These shoes should be designed in such a manner so as to provide proper support to the arches or the feet for those who have flat feet and accurately designed shoes for those who tend to be underpronators. Comfortable and suitable walking shoes tend to reduce the chances of an injury or even an accident such as slipping. While starting to walk one should also remember to always wear comfortable clothing which is appropriate for the length of the walk and also take into consideration the weather conditions. Those who plan on walking when it is brighter and sunny during the day should protect themselves from the rays of the sun by wearing a hat or even by applying some sunscreen. Safety is also of prime importance while walking by oneself. One should always avoid walking in shady or dark area and carry a cell phone or a pepper spray. It is best to have a walking buddy who can be a good friend of even a dog. One should also change their route and timing often so as to ensure safety and also to prevent monotony from setting in which will tend to demotivate the walker and get them to discontinue the walking exercise program. Those who just start walking for the first time as a form of exercise should also learn to hold their head high and stand up straight. Improving one's posture while walking, automatically tends to improve the muscle tone in the back and the abs. One should also pay attention to how they walk and try land on their heel when they step rather than their toe.
