Uphill walking gives the body a cardiovascular workout and also helps in reducing levels of blood sugar. This type of walking may not be possible for everyone due to the constraints of location. However, a similar effect can be obtained by walking on an inclined treadmill. Regular walking helps to burn calories and improves energy levels. Since it promotes fitness, it also reduces many health risks. Many people suffer from obesity and other ailments due to the sedentary nature of their lifestyles. Walking is the ideal exercise for such individuals. In order to burn fat, the body needs to constantly be in fat-burning mode throughout the entire exercise. Walking enables one to burn fat at a steady rate. There are many other health benefits of walking, besides weight loss. It also helps to reduce the possibility of heart disease, depression, osteoporosis, constipation and stroke. It is also a great way to treat sleeplessness. Walking about 10,000 steps every day helps in weight control, blood pressure regulation and blood glucose control.

One may also improve their activity level and set proper goals to increase endurance and fitness by calculating the walking distance. The distance covered as well as number of steps taken could be measured with the help of a pedometer. In case of pedometers that do not have distance tracking, you can take a walk around a known distance. Calculate the number of steps you take and multiply accordingly to obtain the steps taken each mile. Another way to calculate walking distance is to reset your car's trip odometer and drive along the path you walk. If you take the odometer reading once you reach your destination, double that distance in order to take into account the walk back. There are also many websites that have a walking distance calculator. These are easy to use and all you have to do is enter the number of kilometers and your pace. It will then show you how many minutes it will take you to walk those many kilometers.
