Essential Oil Diffuser

Submitted by Kevin Pederson on June 2, 2010

Using a diffuser with essential oils has many health benefits. For those with breathing difficulties and lung problems, aromatherapy diffusers help to clean the air within the room and also have a neutralizing effect on odors. There are several different essential oils and fragrances that may be used in a diffuser. The most commonly used oils include peppermint, cinnamon and lavender essential oils. It is advisable to avoid selecting a diffuser that vaporizes the oil with heat. This can break down the compounds of the oil and destroy its health benefits.

The use of aromatherapy essential oils for health benefits is an age-old practice that is gaining in popularity today. Diffusion refers to the process in which the aromas of pure essential oils are dispersed throughout the room. Oils may be diffused through many different techniques. One can even practice diffusion using items that may be commonly found around the house. Tissue diffusion involves placing a few drops of essential oil on a tissue. When movement takes place in the room, the aroma is diffused. The drawback of this method is that the diffusion is not very strong. In steam diffusion, essential oil is added to hot water. The steam causes evaporation of the oil, thereby diffusing its aroma into the room. Candle diffusion is another technique in which a drop of essential oil is placed on the fresh melted wax of a candle. The candle is then lit and the fragrance is released into the room.

There are also many different types of commercial diffusers available in the market. An essential oil nebulizer is used to break down the oil into molecules and then release the smaller molecules into the air. These smaller molecules are believed to be absorbed by the lungs more easily and as such provide more benefit. The disadvantage of this device is that it is made of glass. Also, it can be time consuming to clean the glass of the oils. An essential oil reed diffuser is another type of diffuser which is composed of a container, reeds and scented oil. The reeds have small openings along their entire length.

When they become moist, the oil is soaked up and transported throughout the whole length of the reed. Whichever method of diffusion is used, it is important to note that aromatherapy is known to have many benefits for the health of the body such as stress alleviation, relaxation, relief from muscular tension and improving the functioning of the respiratory system.
