Geranium oil
has a strong floral flavor and a slight hint of mint. Extracted from the Odorantissimum plant, it has a light apple tone. Rose geranium oil is extracted from Pelargonium graveolens, and this Rose geranium
essential oil
has a rosy smell.
The essential oil of geranium is used in aromatherapy to sooth the mind and emotions, balance the hormones, and stimulate the adrenal cortex. It also stimulates the lymphatic system, and balances the sebum production in the skin. Geranium oil is used to treat wounds.
History of geranium oil:
Colorless and watery, geranium oil has been used since ancient times. It is believed to have originated in the South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Madagascar and Reunion. After that it was introduced in France, Spain and Italy in the 17th century. There are hundreds of varieties of geranium plants, but only a handful can be used to make essential oil in viable quantities.
Oil extraction:
Geranium is a perennial plant that grows up to a height of three feet. It has pointed leaves and pink-white flowers. Essential oil is extracted from the stalks and leaves of the geranium plant, and the oil is extracted through steam distillation.
Precautions:
While this oil is not known to cause any side-effects because of its non-irritant and non-toxic properties, it can react if someone’s skin is very sensitive. Pregnant women should also avoid using the oil as the oil is said to balance the hormonal system.
Therapeutic benefits:
The essential oil of geranium can be used to treat dermatitis, cuts, bruises, burns and acne.
It is also known to treat neuralgia, stress, menopausal problems, PMS.
Geranium oil is used to cure tonsillitis, sore throat, poor blood circulation, edema, breast engorgement and ulcers.
This oil can even cure ringworms, lice, and can act as a mosquito repellant.
Another healing property of geranium essential oil is that it can treat hemorrhoids and eczema.
Geranium oil has astringent properties, and it can help to contract the muscles, gums, blood vessels, tissues and intestines. People use this oil to prevent their skin form sagging and for preventing wrinkles. Hemorrhaging can be stopped by contracting the blood vessels.
The anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties can treat wounds and heal infections.
The cicatrisant properties in geranium oil can heal scars and the marks that one gets after an attack of acne, boils or surgeries.
Geranium oil is known to promote the health of cells and can regenerate new cells, which help the body remain healthy.
