We’ve all passed by those tall, ghostly eucalyptus trees some time in our lives. As common as they seem to be, the essential oil distilled from the leaves of this tree is used for several health purposes. To extract the essential oil from the tree, the leaves are steam distilled.

The oil of eucalyptus is said to be highly inflammable, and has properties that can deter pests and can act as disinfectants.

It is believed that the Aborigines of Australia discovered the medicinal properties of the oil and used it to heal people who had fever or skin problems. Even in modern society, eucalyptus oil is used to treat respiratory ailments and skin problems because of its antibacterial, germicidal and decongestant properties.

Eucalyptol is the active ingredient that also functions as a diuretic. It is even used to lower the blood pressure and bring relief from fevers and coughs. Because of its analgesic properties, eucalyptus oil is used to relieve joint pains and nerve as well as muscle pain. On the psychological level, eucalyptus essential oil is used to combat mental sluggishness and exhaustion.

Pure eucalyptus oil is mixed with massage oils to stimulate the body and mind. It is even used in saunas and spas as detoxification agent. Eucalyptus oil can be used to treat insect bites, burn ulcers and wounds. Abscesses and wounds are often treated with this oil. For treating wounds, place a few drops of this oil on a cotton swab or dressing and place gently over the affected area.

For treating coughs, use a chest compress with a few drops of the essential oil or massage the chest with it. This will improve respiration and will also loosen the phlegm. A few drops of the oil in a diffuser can combat the airborne bacteria and can also kill germs.

For treating fever, use a calf wrap dipped in water with a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Wrap this piece of cloth around your calves and then secure with a piece of dry cloth. This oil can also be used to treat dandruff – mix a few drops with a shampoo and massage it into your scalp. Wait for some moments before washing off. If you’ve got a cold, put a few drops of this oil in your handkerchief and inhale deeply.

For treating sinus problems, you can mix a drop of peppermint with eucalyptus oil. If you suffer from muscle pain, then use a few drops of this oil with some sweet almond oil and massage in a circular motion. You can use lemon eucalyptus oil as an insect repellent and prevent insect bites.
